Welcome Reader & Learner!

Hi, I’m Sophia L. Martinez, a music educator and graduate student who is passionate about music, technology, and, of course, literature. Before starting my Master’s degree in Library Science at Sam Houston State University, I attended the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and completed a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Educational Leadership.

My experience in education has shaped the way I think of the role of a school library. It is more than a place where you can find the latest read, but rather a space where students can explore ideas, discover new interests, create, collaborate, and develop the skills they require to navigate a progressive digital world. In short, the library is the learning hub and heart of their academic success.

My interests include literacy, technology integration, digital citizenship, information literacy, and the importance of library programming. There is a joy in being able to explore resources and tools that can make learning more engaging while still encouraging students to think critically and creatively and become confident in their skills as learners and future leaders.

The Literary Compass is a space where, as a future librarian, I will explore books, digital resources, technology, and ideas related to learning and school librarianship. Through this blog, I hope to share resources and reflections that will be useful to educators, future librarians, and anyone who believes the right resource, book, and/or learning experience can influence students in finding their right direction.

Wherever the path of learning leads, I hope the Literary Compass can help point the way.

I’m Sophie
